We have been notified by our partner, Children’s Heaven, that one thing they could really use is a cow. Yes, they are located in Addis Ababa, a city with a population of over 3.6 million. But, as those of you who have been to Addis will agree, a mere 3.6 million people is NO reason not to have a cow in your back yard.
What would a cow mean to Children’s Heaven? Each cup of milk has 8 ounces of protein, more protein than is in an ounce of meat. On average, a cow can produce 6-7 gallons of milk per day. Assume 16 cups in a gallon…and…drum roll please, that is approximately 96-112 cups of milk every day. That means that every girl at Children’s Heaven would be assured of two cups of milk a day (16 grams of protein).
Too much math? Think of it this way, if every girl at Children’s Heaven didn’t drink her two glasses of milk per day (many of the girls visit only on the weekends), then Children’s Heaven could sell the extra milk to their neighbors (who would then also be getting delicious, nutritious milk) and use the money to fund their school uniforms, tutors, soap, toothpaste, or even other sources of food and nutrition.
As far as I can tell, a cow is a gift that keeps on giving. Yes, there would be some upkeep involved, they’d have to feed and water the cow, and make sure it is protected from the elements. If we were able to provide a cow to Children’s Heaven we could also possibly provides these things as well.
