Rocky Mountain Ethiopia Adopt Get Together 2008

This past Saturday the Rocky Mountain Ethiopia Adoption support group had its annual get together at the Bell family’s house. A fantastic time was had by all (almost 200!) attendees. It’s really amazing how large our group has grown since its inception a few years ago (when there were a meager 30 people at the Marquis/Cudmore house!). One of the teenagers, Kidist, was braiding hair for the kids and she did an amazing job!

The Bell family graciously asked for donations to AHOPE, from HIV to Home and Ethiopian Orphan Relief in lieu of contributions to their party and EOR took home $50! Thanks so much to those who donated. We’ll be sending this money to Ethiopia with Board member Jane when she goes to pick up her son Ezra in August. Jane will be purchasing Ethiopian children’s clothing and jewelry, which will then be for sale on our website around mid-August. All proceeds from our web store will benefit our programs, so these donations will truly have a multiplying effect for years to come. Thanks to all of you who donated and it was great spending time with everyone! Enjoy the pics!

Fundraising for Kids!

If you’re like us, you’d like to raise a child who cares about the rest of the world and wants to do something to help those less fortunate. You want your child to derive joy from putting smiles on the faces of others, not just by putting a new toy in the shopping cart. In this vein, the moms of Ethiopian Orphan Relief (EOR) have come up with fundraising opportunities for kids.

In May, Board Member Kim Pasion’s son Anthony asked that his friends bring art supplies to his birthday party in lieu of gifts–those art supplies will be brought to his sister’s orphanage in Ethiopia, and the children will not only get an art clinic with a visiting artist volunteer, but their works will be brought back to the US, turned into greeting and note cards by EOR, and sold as a fundraiser to provide playgrounds, water filtration, sanitation systems, etc. to benefit orphans in Ethiopia.

In June, Board Member Paige Chapman-Layland’s son Elliott set up a lemonade stand at a multi-family garage sale in his neighborhood and donated all the proceeds to EOR’s general fund.

In July, Board Member Danielle Marquis’s daughter Amelie will host her second birthday, and the family has requested that donations be made to EOR to build a playground at her orphanage in Ethiopia, in lieu of gifts. Also, Board Member Jane Gregorie will be hosting a baby shower for her son Ezra, and she has requested that in lieu of gifts, attendees bring donations for the CHSFS care center where Ezra is being cared for in Ethiopia.

If you’d like to work with EOR to come up with a fundraising plan for your child, please email us at info@ethiopianorphanrelief.org! You may also send donation checks to Ethiopian Orphan Relief, Inc., 6791 Brook Forest Drive, Evergreen, CO 80439.

Famine in Ethiopia–How You Can Help!

As many of you know, Ethiopia is currently experiencing a devastating famine and drought. The Southern region is particularly hard hit. As the area where several of our Board member’s children are from and where many of us have travelled, this has hit especially close to home for Ethiopian Orphan Relief. One of the positive (and free!) things you can do to help is to write a letter to your government officials. Not sure where to start? An example is below. You can find links to email addresses for all elected officials (including the President!) here.

Dear Senator:

Today I write to bring to your attention the devastating food shortage in Ethiopia as caused by the combined effects of drought, insufficient emergency resources, and the increase in food cost.  Reports from Ethiopia are calling this situation the worst since the major humanitarian crisis of 2003.

UNICEF estimates over 126,000 children are in need of urgent therapeutic care for severe malnutrition, and is reporting a dire need for additional funding to provide for the increase in therapeutic supplies.  Among children under five years of age, it is estimated that six million face the risk of acute malnutrition.

After spending time in Ethiopia (specifically the hardest hit southern region) last summer, I can speak personally to the resourceful, efficient, and resilient nature of Ethiopians as a people.  A people full of such beauty, pride, and rich history deserve the aid required to persevere.

The US Department of State states that “Ethiopia is a strategic partner of the United States in the Global War on Terrorism.” and that “U.S. development assistance to Ethiopia is focused on reducing famine vulnerability, hunger, and poverty and emphasizes economic, governance, and social sector policy reforms.”

USAID supports the Government Of Ethiopia’s Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission to respond to crises in a rapid, integrated, and coordinated manner. Timely warning in the two most recent droughts that occurred almost back-to-back ensured a rapid delivery of food, health, agriculture, and water assistance and saved thousands of lives.

It is time for the US to recognize that assistance is needed once again.  I implore you to provide immediate, critical, and ample aid to end this suffering.

I am counting on your attention to this crisis.

Thank you,
(Thank you to my friend Kelly of Gunnison, CO, mother to Amara from Southern Ethiopia, for writing this letter and allowing us to share it with you. Please feel free to pass it along to friends and family, post links on your blogs, etc.)
